The Valley of the mills and The Mill of the Gassetta in the Park of Portofino

If we want to follow a route that is a little different from the usual, from Paraggi we can climb along a very particular path that crosses a valley once rich in water, where, accrding to some documents of the XIII century, there were 35 mills.
The valley of the mills is actually characterized by two distinct valleys, the valley of the Acqua Morta and that of the Acqua Viva.
Just along this last one we can still see the vestiges of some mills that we meet on the sides of our street.
The park authority has arranged to fix this path that runs next to the stream and winds through the humid valley, very rich in vegetation.
Arriving at the end of the path we meet the Mill of the Gassetta.
It’s one of the ancient mills that has been renovated and has become an information point of the park, but not olny.
One of the rooms was used as a museum, where we can see the gears that made the mill work.
The main characeristic of the Mill of the Gassetta is above all its refreshment point (punto di ristoro) with its traditional cuisine, where we can taste typical local dishes.
Ancient and tasty recipes to prepare gastronomic specialties with products from the vegetable garden and orchard.
Seasonal products and raw materials at zero kilometers.
Moreover, periodically, at the Mill of the Gassetta, specific workshop are organized to teach how to make pesto in the traditional way, with pestle and mortar and also to make ù”corzetti” a pasta characteristic of Ligurian cuisine.
The Mill of the Gassetta hosts works of art, musical events and yoga sessions.
It’s managed by the “Portofinese” a company that has recovered over time abandoned lands of Portofino’s mountain and has started to cultivate them again, saving them from decay and at the same time has been able to re-evaluate the territory, with an activity that is carried out respecting the natural environment.
