Mino Viacava, founder of La Portofinese, was born – and still lives – in a house in the Portofino’s piazzetta overlooking the harbour. When he decided to open a space that was both a tasting point and a shop for the sale of the products of his agricultural company, it came naturally to him to do it there: in a former whiskey bar on the first floor of a typical village home overlooking the sea. He called it “Ü Caban, in Genovese meaning a quality of crab. And for consistency with the genius loci has been furnished like a boat, with teak floors and tables, armchairs and benches covered with soft ivory cushions with the inevitable blue sailor stripe, as well as the uniform of the staff and waiters. Inaugurated at the end of April 2022, Ü Caban has 15 seats and provides a special aperitif menu, with Ligurian excellences that recall the maritime traditions of the village. Long-lasting products once used by wives and mothers of sailors that prepared for their loved ones who left for the sea: such as “gallette” typical genovese crackers, anchovies and dried tomatoes.
